Dressing For Comfort On An Alaskan Fishing Trip

By William McCormick

You spend a lot of time planning out your fishing trip to Alaska, but the one detail that can be the most difficult is knowing what clothes to pack for your trip. The weather in Alaska can be quite unpredictable, so you'll need to make sure you pack a little of everything, including a weatherproof jacket.

It's recommended that you dress in layers for the unpredictable weather you'll be facing. You'll want to start with some lightweight clothing like t-shirts or light, long-sleeve cotton shirts. You want to make sure that if it is warm you can feel cool in the sun but not cold if the weather is indeed windy.

The next layer should be something that can keep you warm. Sweatshirts are great. Comfort-fitting sweatshirts are the best. These will need to be shed easily if the weather starts to warm up for you. You'll have your lightweight shirts on underneath, so you'll be ready to go.

Make sure you bring plenty of cotton socks. If you wade around in water, your socks will probably get wet, so you need several pairs on hand. Cotton should be your material of choice, since it allows your feet to breathe. The weather in Alaska is known for being particularly rainy, so make sure to have a raincoat or a poncho to keep you dry and warm. Some people even wear rain pants along with their rain jacket. You might also consider wearing hip wader boots.

And don't forget a fishing hat. You'll be around water most of the day and the sun will reflect off of the water, so protect your head with a quality hat that has a sun visor to help protect your eyes.

There are a few other important things you should think about. Sunglasses are a must. If the weather is sunny, your eyes need to be protected with a good pair of UV blocking sunglasses. Some people even bring two pairs, in case they lose one, but it is not really necessary.

Make sure you don't forget sunscreen lotion and bug repellent. Since you will be out in the sun for great part of the day, you need to make sure your skin is protected. Sunscreen should have a high SPF rating and it should be waterproof. The bug repellent should contain a minimum of 25% DEET.

Since some lodges provide bug repellent and sunscreen, you should check with them before packing your own. Dressing in layers is the most important thing, so that you can be ready for any type of weather and have a great time on your vacation.
